Simultaneous linear & quadratic equations

Quick revise

When solving the above remember:

  • Divide each term by 2 to give a coefficient of y2 of 1.
  • We now need to solve this quadratic equation for y: factorising seems to suggest itself
  • It seems reasonable to assume there may be two points of intersection.

NOTE: In the above example a brief inspection shows that this expression will not factorise so the formula or completing the square are the appropriate methods.
