Quelle heure est-il? - What time is it?

To tell the time in French, you use the phrase il est … heures.

  • Il est une heure. - It's one o'clock.
  • Il est deux heures. - It's two o'clock.
  • Il est trois heures. - It's three o'clock.

As in English, there are special ways of saying midday and midnight:

  • Il est midi. - It's midday.
  • Il est minuit. - It's midnight.
  • To say 'half past' you add et demie to the end of the time phrase:
  • ll est une heure et demie. - It's half past one.
  • Il est cinq heures et demie. - It's half past five.
  • And for 'quarter past' you add et quart. ...
