Making an insoluble salt

Quick revise

For an insoluble salt such as LEAD IODIDE, you need to find a soluble LEAD compound and a soluble IODIDE compound.

A good choice for the soluble lead compound is LEAD NITRATE because almost all nitrates are soluble.

A good choice for the soluble iodide compound is to use a sodium salt because almost all sodium salts are soluble.

The remaining sodium nitrate is soluble and so only the lead iodide will be precipitated.

Once prepared, collect the salt by filtration and wash the solid. Leave it to dry in the air.

Practise this method using a variety of different insoluble salts. See if you can find a method to make the following:

silver chloride, barium sulphate, copper carbonate

Remember you need two soluble compounds to get the two parts of the insoluble one.
